Product Indications
Trimethylglycine (TMG) is a nutrient which plays an important role in the health of the cardiovascular system. TMG works closely with other nutrients such as SAMe, folic acid, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 reduce potentially toxic levels of homocysteine in the bloodstream. However, research is unclear whether homocysteine is a cause of cardiovascular disease. Studies have shown that TMG may help protect against fatty deposits in the liver, which can occur from chronic alcohol use, protein malnutrition, obesity, poorly controlled diabetes, and other causes. TMG is a mood modifier and can therefore have a positive effect on mood by relaxing the mind.

Pharmacological Action
Trimethylglycine is naturally occurring in the body and is produced by oxidation of choline in the liver and kidneys. It is a methyl derivation of the amino acid choline. Trimethylglycine is an osmolyte, which maintains normal cell volume and protects intracellular cell volume under conditions of osmotic stress. By this mechanism it protects the kidneys from high levels of electrolytes and urea. Trimethylglycine can donate a methyl group to remethylate homocysteine into methionine. Methionine is the precursor to S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), which is used as a methyl donor for many important pathways in the human body. SAMe is involved in the methylation of phosphatidylethanolamine to form phosphatidylcholine, which enhances secretion of very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) to transport fat out of the liver. Trimethylglycine can therefore act as a lipotrope, preventing or reducing accumulation of fat in the liver, such as occurs in non-alcoholic steatohepatitis and other forms of fatty liver disease. Due to trimethylglycine’s relationship with SAMe it may be useful as part of an oral therapy for depression. Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12 and folate have been added as they support the function of trimethylglycine. These nutrients work in two ways to metabolise homocysteine: by trans-sulfuration and remethylation. Folate and vitamin B12 are co-factors that are required for the remethylation of homocysteine back to methionine. Trans-sulfuration of homocysteine results in degradation of homocysteine to cystathionine and then to cysteine by Vitamin B6 dependent enzymes.
