Rhodiola contains rhodioloside which is attributed to its “adaptogenic” effects. Rhodiola enhances the body’s tolerance to stress by influencing key brain chemicals, such as serotonin and norepinephrine, and feel-good opioids such as beta-endorphins. Rhodiola has also demonstrated the ability to improve memory and cognitive function under stressful conditions. Eleutherococcus senticosus is thought to stimulate the pituitary-adrenal cortex system. Schisandra is used as an adaptogen for increasing resistance to disease and stress, increasing energy and is hepatoprotective by increasing glutathione. Reishi has the unique ability among medical mushrooms to calm and support nerve function for people with chronic stress, anxiety, or insomnia. Astragalus is often used in the treatment of chronic fatigue syndrome and is has positive effects on the immune system, liver, and cardiovascular system. Preliminary research indicates that ashwagandha suppresses stress-induced increases of dopamine receptors in the corpus striatum of the brain. It also appears to reduce stress-induced increases of plasma corticosterone, blood urea nitrogen, and blood lactic acid. Ashwagandha seems to have anxiolytic effects, possibly by acting as a gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) mimetic agent. In vitro evidence suggests that gotu kola might bind cholecystokinin (CCK) and GABA receptors, which might be responsible for reported anxiolytic effects of gotu kola. Liquorice appears to compliment Korean ginseng by increasing serum cortisol concentrations. Codonopsis seems to be able to stimulate the cental nervous system. It seems to increase indurance and has adrenergic blocking properties.

Alcohol: Concomitant use with eleutherococcus senticosus, may enhance the sedative effects of alcohol and Korean ginseng significantly increases the metabolism of alcohol. Warfarin and anticoagulant medicines: Energising Adaptogens™ appears to affect the anticoagulant and antiplatelet effects and should only be used under the supervision of a medical practitioner. Antidiabetic medicines: Energising Adaptogens™ seems to have hypoglycemic activity. Monitor glucose levels closely. Some antidiabetic medicines include glimepiride, glyburide, insulin, pioglitazone, rosiglitazone and others. Theoretically, licorice might reduce the effect of antihypertensive drug therapy. Antihypertensive medicines: Theoretically, liquorice might reduce the effect of antihypertensive medicines. Digoxin: One case report associated siberian ginseng intake with elevated serum digoxin levels, although there were no symptoms of toxicity. It is not clear whether this was due to a pharmacokinetic interaction which increased serum digoxin levels, or to interference with the digoxin assay. Lithuim: Energising Adaptogens™ is thought to have diuretic properties. Theoretically due to these potential diuretic effects, lithium excretion may be reduced and lead to increased levels. Liquorice might increase the risk of lithium toxicity due to potassium loss. Tacrolimus: Schizandra increases the absorption and plasma levels of tacrolimus. Antihypertensive medicines: Reishi mushroom may have antihypertensive effects and may enhance the effects of antihypertensive medicines. Caffeine: Theoretically, caffeine might have an additive effects on the stimulant effects of Korean ginseng. Furosemide: There is some concern that Korean ginseng may contribute to diuretic resistance. Use this combination with caution. Immunosuppressants: Theoretically, concurrent use may interfere with immunosuppressants by increasing the immune system. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI): Panax ginseng can interfere with MAOI therapy. Benzodiazepines and CNS depressants: Energising Adaptogens™ might have additive effects when used with benzodiazepines and other CNS depressants. Hepatoxicity: There is some concern that gotu kola might cause hepatotoxicity in some individuals. Theoretically concomitant use with other hepatotoxic medicines might increase the risk of developing liver damage. Corticosteroids: Theoretically, concomitant use might potentiate the duration of activity of corticosteroids.
Stomach Acidity: May cause stomach acidity if taken on an empty stomach. Hormone sensitive cancers/conditions: Preliminary evidence shows that Korean ginseng may have estrogenic effects. Women with hormone conditions such as breast cancer, uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, endometriosis and uterine fibroids should avoid Energising Adaptogens.™ Diabetes: Energising Adaptogens™ could have hypoglycaemic effects. Use in diabetics might increase the risks of hypoglycaemic episodes. Hypertension: The mineralocorticoid effects of liquorice can increase blood pressure.
